DAUGHTER OF THE DRUNK AT THE BAR by Michelle O'Neill

When Michelle O' Neill first contacted me about whether or not her memoir would be suitable for Celerytree.com, I immediately resolved to buy myself a copy as one of my Celery Tree membership-required purchases. When Michelle sent us a print copy instead of an e-file, I read it in print, my favorite way to enjoy a book. I felt kind of bad getting a book for free that I had intended on buying.

Maybe someone reading this post who loves a good memoir will buy a copy, and I won't feel so bad. Because let me tell you, it is absolutely one of the best memoirs I have ever read. Seriously, if Michelle had sent this manuscript to WiDo Publishing, we would have snapped it up. I hope it's a screaming success. It certainly deserves to be.

Daughter of the Drunk at the Bar, the author's story of coming of age under the shadow of her father's alcoholism, can be found here.

I reviewed it briefly on Celery Tree, but a fuller review of this book can be found on Goodreads, here.

  10. It sounds like a very nice book, and well especially in todays world so many children are growing up in homes with addicted parents and often that is a cycle that repeats.

  11. I've read two in the last year that were really good - Karen and Ann's - and I don't even read memoirs! Maybe I'm on a new reading trend...

  27. This is a memoir I could not write. My dad was an alcoholic, and I would not want to revisit those days again. If affects your whole life in many ways. But I think it is helpful for others to read these memoirs and perhaps recovering alcoholics could understand what it does to their kids. Writing is cathartic and helpful in many cases.

  28. I like reading books in print too, because it's a different experience from reading a book. Not to mention the thieves in Chicago seek out the electronic devices like Kindles and iPads, so I know they would run off with mine if I bought one.
I love reading memoirs (and that author you described came up with a really intriguing title, which I'm sure appeal to many people and make them want to buy the book). And don't feel guilty about getting the book for free, especially since the author sent you a copy and you promoted her book on your blog anyway.

  38. Hi Karen .. I sure hope Michelle is having good sales with this - it's always 'useful' to be able to read others' lives - we learn so much for ourselves and to share with others .. and thus help too ...

Pity WiDo weren't able to get this .. still Celery Tree is getting better known .. cheers Hilary
