Why be a Writer

If you want to be famous then run for office and be a politician

If you want to be rich then become a plastic surgeon.

If you want to have people know your name then be a teacher.

If you want to make a difference in someone's life then have children.

But if you want to work alone, feel like a freak, be misunderstood, wonder what the point is, always come up short of time and money, while writing stories that bubble up from within about characters you have never met but are strangely in love with, then be a writer.

  3. Yeah, that about sums it up. Not having kids just to make a difference though.

  4. So true, Karen. I love this. If you don't mind I'm going to print it off and frame it. Your really put a writer's journey in perspective here. Bravo.

  5. Yup. I'm going to print out and tape that last paragraph to my computer! (LOL) How totally true THAT is. You are so good at expressing the absolutely truth of the matter!

  8. That was beautiful and now you've made me want to become a writer too at 72, well almost 72, so what to do? See at least I can rhyme a bit. Sorry, I'm just kidding here, but I wanted to let you know how much I have loved this challenge. It has truly been a challenge for me in more ways than one. I am really grateful to you and the others who helped get this started for all of us to participate in.

  9. As Naila said, I've been a teacher so more people know my name than I care to number! And I've raised my children, and they are pretty great! The plastic surgeon and politician just don't cut it for me. And now, I am writing. It's peaceful here in my little world!

  14. I especially love the part about how you said that writers are in love with their characters. I think that's true. That's why we spend so much time with them; it would be a lot more difficult to devote pages and pages to them if we didn't love them.
