Hamburger Tamale Pie

Whenever I ask for menu suggestions, this dish is my husband"s first request. And I like it because I can make a pound of ground beef serve a family of ten. Cheap, easy, delicious, with vegetables mixed into the recipe, making it a complete meal. I usually serve it with a fruit salad.

Is Hamburger Tamale Pie as frequent on your family's dinner table as it is on ours?

BEFORE

Hamburger Tamale Pie

Ingredients:
1 lb. hamburger meat
1 onion, chopped
Garlic clove, chopped
1 can (16 oz.) tomatoes
1 can (16 oz.) whole kernel corn, drained

3 teaspoons chili powder
1 ½ teaspoon salt
1 cup cornmeal
1 cup milk
2 eggs, beaten
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (4 oz.)

Directions:
Cook and stir meat, onion and garlic until meat is brown; drain. Stir in tomatoes with liquid, corn, olives, chili powder and salt. Heat to boiling. Pour into ungreased baking dish, 9 x 11, or 2 quart casserole dish.

  2. WE had a lot of Shepherd's Pie and Hamburger Soup - so delicious that my Mother made and taught each child to do as well as her. I am thinking of a nice Shepard's Pie right now or perhaps I will try your newest recipe. Have a wonderful day Karen.

    1. SaucyKod, I love Hamburger Soup-- it's one of my favorite kinds of soup to make. And my version of Shepherd's Pie is to add mashed potatoes to the top of pretty much any casserole :)

  3. Karen, since you live in Utah, I know we are in the same time zone -- it is 7:15 here in Colorado on a snowy, yes snowy and cold morning. Do you get up early to write or do you schedule your posts so you can sleep a bit later?

  7. I was just about to go and get some dinner on. I think I'll try this recipe out because it is spicy but sooo not something I've ever made before. The internet offered similar recipes with tortillas?! I think I'll start with yours. :)

    1. Elaine, I've never used tortillas in this recipe. I prefer the cornmeal topping because it really does kind of resemble tamales, which I LOVE.

    1. Jeremy, LOL, and my husband demands a photo as well, because that means I made it, took a picture of it, and then he got to eat the tamale pie.

  9. This looks as though I can replace hamburger meat with quorn? (As a vege, I find that's often a good alternative.)

    1. Jo, You could even leave out the meat altogether and add more corn and onions, or perhaps cooked beans instead, and it would be just as good.

  10. Dear Karen, I'm a vegetarian who is becoming a vegan and so this recipe won't work for me, but I copied it to send to my niece who often entertains. I see that "Jo" also is a vegan and I need to discover what "quorn" is. Peace.

  15. Mmm, I need to try these recipes, especially since I barely know how to cook and I need to learn. And I like hamburger recipes, except for Hamburger Helper. But your recipe sounds much tastier.
