Our Guatemala Experience

I'm currently working on a book about our Guatemala experience. We sold everything we had, moved to Guatemala and stayed there two years. Right now we live in Mexico, and yet Guatemala is fresh on my mind. I can't write fast enough. There's so much that happened to us, so much to write about.

I published a blog post on my website, an excerpt from the book, here. They say writing a memoir is painful. I certainly felt that with my self-help memoir, as I wrote about on my last post

I'm not feeling that kind of pain with this new project. Mostly just an urgency to get it all down before the memories fade away.

  1. I read your post. We have all had incidences where anxiety has led to us to lash out at the wrong person and feelings are hurt. Apologies are made, life goes on but the hardest thing is for us is to forgive ourselves.

  2. I enjoyed --or should I say suffered-- reading the excerpt from your Guatemala days. I think the book will be one I will read cover to cover.

  5. Hi Karen. I was surprised when you moved to Mexico. I'd like to know why you left Guatemala. A lot of my friends think memoirs are so blah, but I love them! Bring it on! Now I'm off to see if I've read that post...:-)

    1. Denise, why we left is about as complex as why we went in the first place. It's all going to be part of the book, I think.

  6. Oh I recognise that need to get it all down - and the joy of reliving it in the writing!

  8. Hi Karen - moving is cathartic and can give you new opportunities - which you seem to be grasping. It'll be wonderful to read about Guatemala from someone who lived there ... so keep on writing .. and in the meantime enjoy Mexico ..

    Cheers Hilary

  11. Sounds interesting! I like memoirs, especially ones about people who travel to and live in foreign countries. They live the kind of lives that I'd like to live.
