I normally ignore my spam file since I really don't care to read spammer comments, except to push the delete button. But I happened to look at it this morning and was shocked to find quite a few real people comments tucked away among the weirdo ads for real estate and make up and other things I'm too embarrassed to mention.
I went through and clicked the real ones as "not spam," but some of them are months old and anyone checking back to see why their post never showed up has probably long given up! What a very strange thing.
Have you checked your spam file lately? Found any harmless friendly comments from fellow bloggers hiding there unpublished?
It happens. Sometimes people leave multiple comments thinking the first one didn't go through. I feel so bad about it, but that's the nature of the beast. Sometimes good comments get dragged into the pit.
ReplyDeleteAt least once you mark it as 'not spam' it should let them go through without a hitch next time.
Maria, I sure hope so because one dear blogger has made numerous tries and neither of us could figure out why her comments weren't going through. I started seeing them on my email notifications and figured the problem was resolved not realizing they weren't showing up on the actual posts. Haven't seen a comment from her for ages, she probably gave up trying!
DeleteHi Karen .. that doesn't work - they keep going to spam! I check now .. and rarely get one through ...
DeleteThough see my comment below - sometimes they just get through as emails and apparently go nowhere ..
and sadly people don't check Blogger spam ..
Why embedded comments should be so difficult I've no idea - I've had to go to IE to post this ..
Cheers Hilary
In the three+ years I've been blogging, it happened to me once. I hasten to add that Wordpress isn't paying me to say so!
ReplyDeleteYeah, it's happened to me before. I felt bad about it, too. Now I try to remember to check the spam folder.
ReplyDeleteEvery so often I check my spam and usually it's junk, but sometimes not. Weird how that happens. But thanks for the reminder to check!
ReplyDeleteOh KarenG!! I always check my spam folder cos you are so right - legit comments get sent there amongs the dirge for some crazy reason!!! No idea how to fix that though! Take care

I just looked and there are HEAPS! OMG. Most of them are from Hilary Melton Butcher. So sorry, Hilary! :(
ReplyDeleteMost of mine were from Hilary as well. I hadn't checked since April. A few comments from the A to Z Challenge participants.
DeleteI think I check it once a week, but I'll go look now that you've mentioned it.
ReplyDeleteIt has happened a few times to me as well. I check mine pretty regularly.
ReplyDeleteOH, I should check. I never check. Thanks for this, Karen. Have a great week.
ReplyDeleteI just went and checked before commenting - crap, there were at least fifty real comments in the spam folder from the past two months. I need to check that more often.
ReplyDeleteI guess Blogger is getting serious about stopping spam! Which is great as long as we check our spam folders!
DeleteAlex: Wow, 50. Holy crap on a cracker. I don't check my spam folder because all comments go directly to my Blogger Email.
DeleteKaren: Howdy Hello :-)
I haven't checked my lately but I will now and make a note to do it more often.

Thoughts in Progress
I do find occasional valid comments in my spam folders and release them to be published. Usually they are comments on older posts that have moderation turned on.
ReplyDeleteJust yesterday I was excited to see a comment from the lead guitar player of an obscure 60s rock band that I had written about during the A to Z. Often the trapped comments are from interesting parties who have discovered a post through a search engine.
I don't have too much problem with spam.

Tossing It Out
I've got a couple of regular commenters who always go straight into spam. I have no idea why, but it means I have to check regularly just to make sure I'm not ignoring them!
ReplyDeleteI try to check my spam comments every so often, and once in a while, I find a regular commenter. It's strange how that happens.
ReplyDeleteI do check, and lately I have some "interesting" comments that don't always make sense. So far there's nothing malicious or ugly. Keeping fingers crossed.
ReplyDeleteI check my Spam folder a few times a week; I have found legitimate comments there in the past, and it's always a bit of a surprise.
ReplyDeleteYep, this happens to specific bloggers I know for some reason. There's one who comments on my blog a lot that gets captured in spam often so now I'm in the habit of checking my spam. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteI did have one nice comment end up in the spam category. Must be something about the letters or spacing. Weird. I'd rather just check spam now and then, though, than have spam end up in the comment section.
ReplyDeleteI found one a few weeks ago. I am having issues with comments not showing up at the moment. Frustrating.
ReplyDeleteOur dear friend Arlie Bird's comment on my WP got spammed. Since I haven't been blogging much lately, I just found it. I thought, What's happening? Probably happening on a mini scale here on the Web, minor chaos, like "it's" happening on a larger scale in the "real" world, major chaos. Maybe.... But it's frustrating...
ReplyDeleteIt is only recently that I checked mine and I, like, you was surprised by the genuine comments that I found had disappeared in there. I will be trying to remember to check it more often from now on.
ReplyDeleteI haven't checked mine for a while - off to now!
ReplyDeleteI don't tend to check mine very often and because I have a strong belief in the spam filter, have never considered the other option that it's capturing real comments. Thanks for the reminder.
ReplyDeleteUh-oh, I better check my spam folder.
ReplyDeleteI've noticed that too. Not too many though.
ReplyDeleteOh dear. I have NEVER checked my spam file. #bloggerfail
ReplyDeleteAs soon as I wrote that I've only had one comment mistakenly end up in spam in three years, I got two more - from the same person, but when the person is called onlinefunland and the comment says simply, "awesome" it's not surprising.
ReplyDeleteIt has happened to me too. and yesterday, for the first time, two weird and nasty anonymous comments slipped by and were published. They mentioned Sweden, maybe that's why, but they were pure evil and I was really upset and got rid of them. Maybe I should have reported them too. I will if I see them again.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you wrote this post, because I didn't even realize that I had a spam file. I clicked on it and found a couple comments that never showed up on my blog. What's weird is that they were both from followers who have left comments on my blog before.
ReplyDeleteHilary, I just got your comment on this post in my email, but it's not here! LOL. I always get your comments in my email, so from now on I'll just log into spam to retrieve them! xx
ReplyDeleteHi Karen .. that doesn't work - they keep going to spam! I check now .. and rarely get one through ...
ReplyDeleteThough see my comment below - sometimes they just get through as emails and apparently go nowhere ..
and sadly people don't check Blogger spam ..
Why embedded comments should be so difficult I've no idea - I've had to go to IE to post this ..
Thanks Jess - and others who've found my comments lurking in spam ...
Even if they come through on email - they're not necessarily appearing on the blog post ..
It's an anomaly ....
Cheers Hilary
Hi Jess .. this is my third comment here .. and as you know they're in spam .. and don't appear here yet ..
ReplyDeleteThanks for commenting here quite so quickly - it's great at least everyone will see what can happen to comments -
The other frustrating thing is - it looks to other commenters that I'm not commenting on some blogs - when (of course) I probably am ..
Such is life for now ..
Cheers and enjoy the summer months to you all and you Jess and Karen ... Hilary
Hilary, Had to retrieve your comments from spam. I'm wondering if you could try something as one of the things spam comments all have in common is lots of .... and dashes and such, which is part of your writing style when you make comments. Could you try making a comment without the dashes and extra periods and see if that works?
DeleteKaren
Karen, here's a story as to my comments and let's see what's happening. It's a reasonable day here today we have a bit of sun, while the Downs look gorgeous very fresh varieties of green, some blue sky and fluffy clouds. I am enjoying some of Wimbledon, as tennis and strawberries are here.
ReplyDeleteHilary
Hilary, Well, it was worth a try but it still went to spam. I checked and marked it as not spam, so here you are. Another option might be to contact Blogger directly. Arlee Bird's comments were all going to spam awhile back and he contacted Blogger to fix the problem. Not sure why they think such a lovely, real person as yourself is a spammer.
DeleteAt least I know now that when I see your comment in my email, to get on my computer and quickly check my spam file to find and publish your comment.
DeleteKaren the new comment is showing for me and has come through in email though I suspect the same thing will apply and it won't show.
ReplyDeleteSome of my embedded comments show in other (their) blogs and I must try and spend some time seeing who and what, I have been trying to work it out. Some comments don't even go into spam eg Gary of Klahanie.
Hilary
Hi Karen .. worth a try as you say - thanks for keeping your eyes open for my comments!!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure it's to do with the set up somehow - because it's only been happening since April last year - when Google bought blogger and changed things around.
My other m/c that I don't use - but I need to get it out does work for embedded comments (I think) and if I go to the Library .. they work ok .. but then the machines are set up with Microsoft (IE) -
I still try and work it out .. somehow ..
Cheers anyway .. lunchtime for me and I'm starving .. Hils
I've just checked, and I found one from Lynda caught in there! I do check it about once a month, but really I don't get much spam. *knocks on wood*
