Life in Guatemala A to Z: Mayans

The Mayan people are the best part about living in Guatemala.

Their enterprising and artistic spirits...

their colorful handiwork and tapestries...

the devotion to their religion...

their celebrations and festivals...

and most of all, their beautiful, friendly smiling faces....

  1. What a beautiful photo-essay! I am touched by the offering of harvested crops (?). And the colors and smiles, of course. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Marcia, I too was touched by the offering, laid out so neatly and lovingly. It was so beautiful, I took pictures from nearly every angle.

  4. The colors alone make me want to visit!

  5. The colours are so breathtaking even with the fruit and veggies displayed in front of the statue. The people do look happy and they probably don't have much-tells one how to live. I have to make a card inspired by these colours

  6. I always got along well with Chapins. They are normally pretty easy-going.

  7. Guatemalan textiles are known for their vibrant colors. I see this applies everywhere.

  8. Karen, I am absolutely loving your blog. I'm so glad that the A-Z challenge brought you to my blog first.

I spent a month in Xela in 2007 because I wanted to learn Spanish, and I really want to go back. I spend 2 weekends in Pana, and your blog and beautiful photos bring it all back. I don't think I'll be able to get there this summer, but I might try for 2015. My Spanish is rusty, so it's a great excuse!

    1. Chris, I hope you do! And be sure to look me up at the Casa Colonial Hotel! It's right off Santander and February 14, on Calle Monterey.

  9. What beautiful photos and beautiful people. I am loving your A to Z introduction to Guatemala!

(BTW, was that Spongebob Squarepants in the line (left side of photo) on the second to last photo? Or have I watched too much children's television?)

    1. Chuck, It kinda does look like him! But I took the photo so fast from a van driving by, I don't remember. My best guess is yes because this was some kind of parade where kids dressed in all kinds of outfits, even clowns mixed with more traditional kinds of Guatemalan costumes. The van driver said it was a festival but I couldn't understand what kind.
